TROMPE L'OEIL
"Trompe loeil"
is the literal translation from
the French "deceit of the
eye". It is a mural pictorial
decoration which, through the
wise use of the perspective, "deceives"
the observer inducing him to find
himself in front of a real image
and not of a painting. And that
because trompe-l oeil
is an ideal continuation of the
environment in which it is inserted:
another room, a terrace, a window
from which one can enjoy a beautiful
landscape. The first trompe-l
oeil dates back to the Greek
and Romans. But it was in the
Renaissance that this technique
spread, with the application of
the perspective and its laws.
Famous artists were called to
decorate aristocratic palaces
and residences (see for example
Giulio Romanos work in Palazzo
del Tè in Mantova),
and they represented landscapes
and architectural buildings with
extreme fidelity.
